Karl Gates was born and raised on the North Side of Chicago, the son of Bud and Erna Gates. He grew up in a close-knit family alongside his sisters Betty and Charlotte and his brother Norm — a childhood rooted in the neighborhoods, streets, and community of the city he loved.
He attended Budlong Elementary School and went on to Amundsen High School, where the seeds of a life dedicated to learning were quietly taking root. He pursued his passion for language and art at North Park College, studying English and Art, before earning his Master’s in Education from the University of Wisconsin.
In 1961, Karl walked through the doors of Ridgewood High School in Norridge, IL for the first time — and what followed was 41 years of dedicated, inspired teaching. In his classrooms, something quietly remarkable happened: students discovered parts of themselves they hadn’t known were there. Karl had a gift for that — for seeing people clearly, drawing them out, and making them feel that what they had to say mattered.
He retired in 2002 after a long and storied career, but never truly stopped teaching — the lessons he left behind continue to echo through every student whose life he touched. Karl Gates passed away in March 2026, and the world is quieter for it.
Karl is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Jeanne Gates, and his three children — Justin Gates, 50, and Kate and Megan Gates, 45. In perhaps the most fitting tribute of all, Justin has carried his father’s torch back to the very place it all began — teaching today at Ridgewood High School, the same halls where Karl spent 41 years shaping young minds. The legacy lives on.
